Governor Mike Sonko plans to charge slum dwellers in Nairobi Sh100 garbage fee every month as he seeks to raise the Sh7 Billion budgetary deficit.
According to the proposal contained in the Nairobi City County Finance Bill 2018 tabled in County Assembly on Tuesday, Sonko wants Nairobians living in estates to pay Sh300 monthly as garbage fee.
According to the Bill, Nairobians living in posh areas like Runda, Karen and Kileleswa will be required to pay Sh500 monthly garbage fee.
Currently, majority of Nairobians are paying between Sh150 and Sh300 for garbage collection.
If the Bill sails through, it will also see parking fees in Nairobi Central Business District (CBD) go up by 33 percent meaning that car owners will be paying Sh400 from Sh300.
A section of Nairobi MCAs have however vowed to shoot down the Bill on grounds that it is seeks to overburden Nairobians with taxes.
Nairobians have until Friday October 27 to present their views on the proposed Bill.
Kibera MP Ken Okoth has since asked Governor Sonko to sensitize Nairobians about the Bill.
The MP also wants Sonko's government to cushion residents from exorbitant charges.
