Nakuru County Senator Susan Kihika has hit out at Central Organization of Trade Union (COTU) Secretary General Francis Atwoli, accusing him of turning Labour Day celebrations at Uhuru Park in Nairobi into a political rally.
Kihika claims that the Labour Day celebrations was a NASA/Kieleweke rally.
"Tuned in to hear what Atwoli had to say on the plight of workers, COTU's score card and substantative agenda. Alas, he had hijacked the workers day and made it a Kieleweke/NASA rally. Disgusting! No wonder Uhuru Park was empty," she tweeted.
Atwoli and Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko led the Labour Day celebrations that was boycotted by the Federation of Kenyan Employers (FKE) and workers.
Several politicians among them former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka, Amani National Congress (ANC) Party leader Musalia Mudavadi, and Bungoma Senator Moses Wetangula attended the celebrations.
A host of MPs majority from the opposition also attended the workers day celebrations.
Leaders who spoke called on the government to remain firm in the war against corruption.
The leaders said that corruption is a dragon that must be slayed by all means.
During the celebrations, the government did not announce any pay increment for workers.
COTU had asked for a 15% pay rise for workers, but the government remained silent.
Labour Cabinet Secretary (CS) Ukur Yattani said that consultations for pay increase for workers are going on and the outcome will be communicated later.
