Speaking Saturday at Uhuru Market during a clean-up exercise, the president said that it was wrong for those campaigning as 2022 was far away.

Instead of engaging in politics, Uhuru advised on the need to work for the people of Kenya.

"There is a reason why you have seen me remain silent these days. We know after every five years we have elections after five years. Why can't we wait for five years so that we can start engaging in the politics of the next elections? Let's work for the people," he said.

His strong words come in the context of a raging war of words between his deputy William Ruto and veteran opposition leader Raila Odinga who have been propping themselves for 2022.

Uhuru's term will come to an end in 2022 and Kenyans will have another opportunity to elect another president.

Deputy President William Ruto had accused Raila Odinga of seeking to remove him from Jubilee.

Raila fired back in a veiled attack on Ruto, saying that war on corruption was behind the noises and 'barking'.
