Supreme Court Judge Jackton Ojwang is set to retire in February 2020. Ojwang has served in the Judiciary for 16 years. His retirement comes months after he survived ouster scare.
Ojwang is expected to go for terminal leave starting January 2020 as he waits to hand over the office officially in February.
The retirement has set a stage for his succession, even as President Uhuru Kenyatta maintains that the Judiciary has enough judges to serve all Kenyans.
Confirming the retirement of the judge, Chief Registrar of the Judiciary Anne Amadi said that everyone at the Judiciary has been informed about his looming retirement.
“Justice Ojwang will retire in February,” said Ms Amadi.
The retirement will open another battle of antagonism between President Kenyatta and Chief Justice David Maraga. The president has been silent about the appointment of 41 judges that were recommended by the Judicial Service Commission.
In court documents, the head of state has argued that some of those judges have been adversely mentioned in different cases.
“It is in the public domain that the government is currently rationalizing budgets for the nation’s sustainability,” President Kenyatta said.
Kenyatta affirmed that he will not okay the nomination of any candidate he can prove has integrity-related issues.
