Ukambani region is no doubt one of the country’s political grounds as far as the national politics is concerned.
The region boasts of active politicians who continue to shape the country’s political spheres and are likely to play a key role as far as the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) is concerned moving into the New Year (2020).
Wiper Party leader, Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka is one of the Kamba politicians to watch in 2020. The former Vice President has already declared interest to contest the presidency in 2022 and it will be interesting to watch him as he navigates the political circles in search of support.
As he eyes the presidency in 2022, Kalonzo has vowed to support President Uhuru Kenyatta’s Big Four development agenda and the renewed war against corruption.

The Maendeleo Chap Chap Party leader who fell out with Kalonzo in 2013 is being seen as the next Kamba political kingpin owing to his rising political fame. While boasting of support from President Uhuru Kenyatta and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga in his bid for the presidency in 2022, it will be interesting to see how Governor Mutua navigates the murky succession politics.
Known for his political controversy and hard-hitting political statements against critics, former Machakos Senator Johnstone Muthama is also a man to watch in 2020. Muthama has already stirred political debate by hinting on a possible Kalonzo Musyoka and Deputy President William Ruto political alliance in 2022. A fearless politician, Muthama is being taunted to take over from Kalonzo as the Kamba political kingpin.
Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu is another Kamba politician to watch in 2020. Known as ‘Mama Rainbow’, Ngilu is a political strategist who will have a key role to play in the Kamba succession politics and the BBI debate.
Makueni County Governor Professor Kivutha Kibwana wraps up the five politicians to watch in 2020. A lawyer by profession, Kibwana is serving his final term in office and his perceived frosty relationship with Kalonzo is triggering political dilemma as far as the Ukambani succession politics is concerned. There are also claims that Kibwana could bid for the presidency in the 2022 general election.
