The 2-meter long Nile crocodile disrupted leisure activities in June 2013, something the Mombasa Marine Park Assistant Security warden Mwinyi Mwandungo said was unusual.

"The reptile was spotted in the waters by a lone swimmer who was coming out of water after a swimming. This is one of the rare occurrences here as crocodiles are not known to inhabit salty waters," he said.

"We suspect that it might have been washed into the ocean waters after swimming in rain water through a seasonal stream that empties its waters near the public beach."

Marine rangers were informed who later trapped the crocodile using a fishing net and took it to Mtwapa Snake and Crocodile farm.

The warden assured members of the public that the beach was safe since it was under surveillance by the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) marine team.
