Deputy President William Ruto has continued to portray himself as a typical example of someone who walked through a tough path before reaching his current position in society.
At a National Prayer Breakfast meeting, Dr Ruto recalled how he walked to an exam room barefoot, adding that he first bought shoes in 1981 when joining secondary school.
"In 1980 when I was in standard 7 preparing for CPE, I went to do exams barefoot. It was nature. My first shoe was bought in 1981 for Sh60. I am saying this because the gentleman who didn't have shoes is sitting at the high table today," he recalled.
For years now, Dr Ruto has projected himself as a candidate for poor people, often using the 'hustler' tag when traversing the country.
In April, Ruto also recalled how he used to pay Sh1,750 for house rent around Dagoretti Corner, where he stayed for several years after completing his university education.
"When am in Dagoretti, I remember a lot. I used to stay at Ngano. During that time, I used to pay a monthly rent of Sh1,750. Even my landlady used to be a good person. One of these fine days I'll give her a courtesy call," recalled Ruto.
It's at Dagoretti South, Ruto said, he used to invite his future wife Rachael Ruto for dates. Later, the two married and settled in the constituency that is now under the leadership of John Kiarie.
"My wife and I used to come here for dates and we would later marry. Our first child was born here in Dagoretti South. So I have a history in this area," added the DP, amid cheers from the crowd.
