Wiper party headed by former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka was undoubtedly the most popular party in Ukambani region.
However, it's sad that the party is slowly but surely losing its popularity in its backyard. One would wonder what happened to the party and what is the cause of its looming downfall.
After the 2013 general elections, the party had three governors, four senators, three Women Representatives, several legislators and almost three-quarters of the county representatives. However, the most surprising thing is that after the 2017 elections, Wiper lost most of these seats.
As at now, Wiper doesn't have a governor, only two senators, three women reps, a handful of MP's and several MCA's. This due to a mistake Kalonzo did during the primaries. The party turned away capable candidates and offered direct nominations to its preferred candidates.
However, most of those offered the tickets failed in the elections. This is because Wiper forgot that the electorates were watching what was unfolding.
An interview with some of the leaders who were turned away from the Wiper party noted that the party would still be dominant in the region if only it followed the due procedure in picking candidates. This is because three-quarters of the candidates turned away clinched the seats with other party tickets and others as independent candidates.
"I was ready for the primaries but they chose to give the ticket to another candidate, however, it's their loss," Fabian Muli the Kangundo Member of Parliament told Hivisasa on Wednesday.
The rebellion Kalonzo is facing today would have been easy to manage if he had leaders at the legislative positions.
Unless the party changes its way of doing things, it will soon become history.
