The much tauted Luhya Unity suffered yet again a major blow on Friday after Deputy President William Ruto seemingly dismissed the idea of picking running mate from Western Kenya
Ex-Kakamega Senator Bonnie Khalwale had ignited the debate on running mate during the burial of Farouk Kibet's father in Turbo.
"Mr Deputy President tell these people from other regions that we have numbers. Give us the running mate and you will be president," he said.
Despite being frontrunner in 2022 polls, Ruto has kept cards close to his chest on running mate position even as Central Kenya insists that it must be in his equation.
And at the function, Ruto indirectly told off Khalwale, a former NASA campaigner, basing his argument on proximity between Rift Valley and Western.
"From here to Kakamega is just three of so kilometres. How do you explain it given that we share everything and we are one people?" he asked.
Western Kenya leaders under Senator Moses Wetangula and Bonnie Khalwale have been pushing for Luhya unity with Deputy President post being on top of their agenda.
But a defiant Musalia Mudavadi, who was installed Luhya de facto leader, has ruled out possibility of playing second fiddle to any person in 2022 polls.
