A leaked video of a phone conversation between Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko and his Kiambu counterpart Ferdinand Waititu has continued to elicit mixed reactions from different factions. In the conversations, Sonko unwittingly admits that he is not the boss of the county. The governor claims he got orders from above to have Waititu’s wife and 15 others arrested in the ongoing crackdown on land grabbers.
“Let me just release mama (Waititu’s wife). The order is from above. I will only release ‘mama’. The rest you can call ‘mdosi’. Order is from above as the boss is fighting corruption,” says Sonko in the recording. The two also revisit their friendship since they joined politics, but Sonko reveals that there is nothing he can do over the same because he runs the county under instructions.
“Unajua mimi Nairobi nimekaliwa. Order imetoka huko juu…” says the governor. Sonko and Waititu have been hitting headlines for the past week after the latter maintained that he does not back the demolition of properties located on public land. The Kiambu governor caused a stir online when he recommended for the diversion of the rivers instead of bringing down the buildings found near them. He later came out to defend his remarks, saying he was misquoted.
