It is said once bitten twice shy. The slogan did not impact any lesson to a shoe 'thief' who was forced to eat chili pepper after a section of Muslim faithful found him stealing from them.
The 'thief' was caught stealing shoes from Sakina mosque in Mombasa during prayer time. He was forced to eat pepper as a way of punishment.
The young man said he had been stealing shoes from different mosques within Mombasa to deliver them to his 'boss', Felix, who then takes the shoes to the market for selling.
He confessed that he supplies the stolen shoes to Felix who then takes them to the market at the Likoni ferry or in Changamwe within Mombasa County.
He was made to promise that he will never steal again.
"I swear before God, I will never steal from anyone at any mosque," said the man.
A few days later, the man was again caught red-handed in another unnamed mosque within Mombasa stealing shoes, and this time around it was not raw pepper as a punishment, it was a beating.
He said he hails from Likoni and often opted to steal anytime he misses on casual jobs within the place.
