In 2011, Kisumu Governor Anyang' Nyong'o, then Kisumu Rural Member of Parliament left the nation for medical attention in the Unites States of America.
Nyong’o who would only reveal that he was suffering from prostate cancer when he had already been operated on at the University of California’s San Francisco Cancer Care in January 2011.
Amazingly, the public figure never traveled with anyone there apart from his wife Dorothy Nyong’o, without any company of aides or assistants.
And since his wife left for bible study sessions in the neighborhood leaving him all alone, the leader had to prepare his own dinner.
Speaking to Standard reporters, the Governor said that he left his aides back in Kenya after realizing that his treatment and chemotherapy would take a long time.
"I knew I was going to be away for long and so it was only fair that I let my employers, colleagues and the general public knows why I’m away," he was quoted on March 4, 2011.
Ironically, Nyong’o sought medical attention far from home at a time when he was the Cabinet Minister for Health back at home.
Nyong’o would later be elected the Senator for Kisumu in 2013 and later the Kisumu County Chief in the previous 2017 general polls.
