Political analyst Ambrose Weda has faulted requests by a section of Gusii leaders to Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga to endorse Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i for a political seat in the 2022 polls.
Raila was pressured to hold Matiangi's hand when he attended a burial ceremony in the region last week, as leaders asked him to declare the CS fit for an elective seat.
Though the former prime minister promised to do it at the right time, Weda opines that Raila will never do such a thing as he has no space for the CS, and is only embracing him in line with his truce with President Uhuru Kenyatta.
"I don't think he will declare him fit (tosha). He has only embraced him because of the handshake but I don't think he has any space for Matiangi," said the commentator on KBC English Service's the Big Conversation on Wednesday.
According to Weda, Raila only pledged to endorse Matiang'i because he had been cornered and had to craft a way out.
He argued that Raila was in the region to campaign for himself, adding that it is funny to expect him to begin campaigning for another person, in the name of the CS.
"They must have caught Raila off guard and being a veteran politician, he had to craft his way out. He had gone to campaign for himself, how do you expect him to campaign for another man?" he asked.
Though the CS is yet to publicly declare any political interest, a section of the Gusii leaders have been associating him with either the Nyamira and Kisii gubernatorial posts.
