The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party is making several moves as it prepares itself for the 2022 general elections.
The party on Monday formed a three-member committee to look at its operations, including nomination rules and practice, and how it affects the strength of the party.
The three-member team includes the party’s National Elections Board chairperson Judy Pareno (nominated senator), Jared Okelo (Nyando MP) and executive director Oduor Ong’wen.
The three are expected to give the final recommendation to the party's National Executive Council (NEC) on how future nominations will be conducted. The party’s nominations have been an issue even with non-members as they accuse it of strangling democracy.
Their submissions are expected by the end of May.
On Monday, the party’s NEC also gave the secretary-general Edwin Sifuna the green light to conduct grassroots elections for the party by 2020 as per ODM’s constitution.
Party leader Raila Odinga attended the Monday meeting.
“The NEC also gave the nod for secretary general Edwin Sifuna and the national secretariat to start the preparations for grassroots elections to be held next year (2020) as per the provisions of the constitution of the party. The party holds grassroots elections after every five years,” the party’s director of communications Philip Etale said.
