Veteran politician Koigi Wa Wamwere has thrown his weight behind Deputy President William Ruto over his (Ruto) fears for his life.
The DP has since raised concerns about his safety, claiming that a plot could be in the making, by some top state officials from Mt Kenya region, to assassinate him.
Speaking on Saturday, the former Subukia MP stressed on the need for the matter to be handled with the seriousness it deserves, considering to Ruto's position.
He said that similar threats have repeatedly ended up being realized in the past, recalling how Tom Mboya raised such concerns before his murder in 1969, hence a very serious matter.
"Mambo haya yafaa kuchukuliwa kwa uzito, hata kama ni tetesi ni muhimu kuchukuliwa kwa uzito. Huku nyuma kuna watu waliletewa vitisho vya kuuawa na wakauawa, waliposema wanatishiwa watu walisema wanapiga domo tu," he said.
This loosely translates to; "This issue needs to be taken seriously, even if they are rumours. Previously, there are people who whose lives were threatened and ended up being killed. When they said it people thought they were only bickering."
The former Nakuru senatorial aspirant made the remarks during an interview on Radio Sauti Ya Mwananchi's Cheche show on Saturday evening.
He also ruled out chances of the DP using the claims for political mileage, basing on the sensitivity of the matter, saying that Ruto is and is aware that he is above that level.
According to Wamwere, the DP's concerns are most likely genuine.
"Kama kuna mtu anaweza sema hivi ili kujijenga kisiasa ni wazimu na hafai kukaa miongoni mwa watu. Natumai yeye si yule kijana ambaye alilia eti mbweha anshambulia ili kujijenga.
(If there is anyone who can make such claims to build themselves politically then they are mad people who should not live amongst others. I hope he is not the young man who faked a wolf attack to build himself,") he added.
This comes as a rare support from the leader who previously accused the DP of engineering his humiliating loss in the 2017 Jubilee Party primaries for the Nakuru senatorial seat.
