Former Makadara lawmaker Benson Mutura has lashed out at a section of politicians who have been pushing for constitutional amendments in the name of inclusivity.
The referendum debate has been hot, with forces allied to President Uhuru Kenyatta and ODM boss Raila Odinga banking on the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) for changes.
However, both the calls for changes and the BBI have been questioned by allies of Deputy President William Ruto, who have vowed to thwart any attempts to make changes.
Mutura has thrown his weight behind the anti-changes push, noting that its becoming a culture for politicians to push for changes to satisfy their political needs, which is wrong.
He saya that rather than pushing for a larger executive, the devolution law should be implemented and more money sent to counties, as nobody will then care about the presidency.
"Even if we were to switch the president now, yet we dont respect devolution it won't be of any help. Amendments will only kill devolution (Hata tubadilishe president saa hii na hatuheshimu devolution hatutasaidika. Tukibadilisha sheria tutaua Ugatuzi)," he said.
He made the remarks on Radio Jambo's Mazungumzo Waziwazi show on Saturday morning.
The former lawmaker said that the solution to Kenya's leadership problem lies in implementing the law, especially among politicians, who are leading the amendments push.
He predicted that even if changes were to be made, politicians feeling left out will soon be pushing for more changes.
"Even if we make 20 constitutional changes yet leaders cannot follow them what other laws do we want? (Hata tubadilishe katiba mara ishirini kama viongozi hawatafuata sheria, ni sheria gani zingine tunataka)," he posed.
