Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has cautioned against plans by a section of politicians to use the famous handshake between President Uhuru Kenyatta and Opposition chief Raila Odinga to scuttle Deputy President William Ruto’s 2022 presidential ambitions.
Cherargei speaking in Emgwen constituency on Sunday said as leaders in the Rift Valley region, they will not allow being used as a trap in the handshake.
The vocal Jubilee Senator further hit out at individuals using the handshake to plot for the 2022 general elections.
“Handshake is good but if there is someone hiding behind it so that he can vie for the presidency in 2022 I want to tell him that he should come and seek for votes from the electorate,” said Cherargei in an apparent reference to Odinga.
“If the handshake was meant to be a trap for someone then we won’t allow to be used as a trap,” he added.
The youthful first-time Senator further said they will not be cowed by anybody and will continue ushing for the well being of their locals even as they eye the top seat in 2022.
Ever since the president and Odinga buried the hatchet and agreed to work together, there has been jittery in a section of politicians allied to DP Ruto who fear the handshake may end up scuttling the 2022 game plan as earlier agreed when the duo, Kenyatta and Ruto ascended to power in 2013.
