Residents of Ogango village in Kolwa, Kisumu County came out in their hundreds on Sunday to protest against rising insecurity in the region.
Led by area Member of County Assembly (MCA) George Omondi, the residents expressed their fears over a vigilante group that has been allegedly killing and harassing people in the area.
They demanded answers on the increased killings of fellow residents, the latest incident being the murder of Willis Obura Awinda alias Chief, a bodaboda rider.
They claimed that the latter was stabbed and his body burnt by the group, and are now calling for police intervention and possible prosecution.
The MCA noted that the gangs are armed and do not shy away from striking in broad daylight, posing great danger to unarmed residents.
"If the gangs can strike and stab people in broad day light, then who is safe here?" he posed as quoted by Standard.
Over the last two weeks, they claimed, the vigilante group has been involved in several killings and other offences, including raping a retired teacher in Rabuor area.
In response, Kisumu East Assistant Commissioner Josephine Ouko and area OCPD Ancent Kaloki held a public Baraza to address the issue.
The police boss also confirmed that his officers have since arrested one of the vigilantes and announced a boosted patrol team to beef up security in the area this festive season.
