For the past three weeks, Orange Democratic Movement party leader Raila Odinga has seemingly penetrated into Deputy President William Ruto's Rift Valley home turf.
A fortnight ago, Odinga toured Rift Valley where he was received by Elgeyo-Marakwet Governor Alex Tolgos among other top leaders from the region.
But the trip that was meant to celebrate retirement of Joshua Kutuny's mother-in-law Ruth Kiptoo is now shaping to tough political realignments.
On Thursday, the team of leaders from North Rift led by Tolgos, Kutuny and Moiben MP Silas Tiren returned to Capitol Hill where they introduced the thorny debate of maize farmers.
In his remarks, Kutuny asked Mr Odinga to support the plight of farmers. In the recent past, the leaders have been pointing fingers at Dr Ruto, accusing him of doing little on maize farming.
“As you speak to President Kenyatta about the handshake, remember to speak to him about maize sector problems. Don’t also forget to speak to him about insecurity in Kerio Valley," he said.
Governor Alex Tolgos, who has been leaning towards the Kieleweke team, said any leader was welcome to Elgeyo Marakwet.
"We are firmly in support of the handshake. You are welcome any time to this county, Mr Odinga. Don't stay away for too long," he said.
On Friday, Mr Odinga issued a statement in favour of the leaders, arguing that the country has plenty of maize and that there is no need for the government to import more.
