Public transport in Mandera town was on Sunday suspended over what security agencies termed as a terror threat.
The roads closed include those heading to Nairobi, Rhamu and Elwak.
Issuing a statement on the roads' closure, Mandera County Police boss Jeremiah ole Kosiom revealed that they had received intelligence that suspected Al-Shabaab terrorist were planning to attack passengers on the said routes.
“We received information that suspected al-Shabaab militants, who were targeting public transport, had been sighted along the Mandera-Rhamu-Elwak road on Sunday,” said Kosiom.
Kosiom further indicated that the roads would remain closed as security agencies needed some time to respond to the security threats before public transport vehicles are allowed back on the roads.
By Sunday afteafternoon, there was heavy presence of police officers in Bambo, Chabi-bar, Rhamu, Selukatiffa, and Elwak areas trying to comb the villages in search of the suspected assailants.
The most affected bus companies are those plying the Mandera-Nairobi routes as hundreds of passengers remained stranded.
Even as the war against terrorism rages on in the volatile North Eastern region, Mandera county remains one of the easy targets for Al-Shabaab to execute their attacks, a thing that government agencies have blamed on its proximity to Somalia.
