Deputy President William Ruto on Saturday praised retired President Daniel Moi as his political mentor.
Speaking during Jonathan Toroitich’s burial at Kabimoi Baringo, Ruto said Mzee Moi is like his father and he owes him for his political growth to the position of Deputy President.
“I have come here as a son of President Moi to bury my brother Jonathan as I started my political career at Kanu YK 92 and I learnt a lot from Mzee Moi,” Ruto said as quoted by Nation.
Jonathan was the eldest son of Mzee Moi and his late wife Lena Moi. He died at a Nakuru hospital after suffering cancer for a long period.
During the burial, Ruto also tried to downplay his political differences with Baringo Senator Gideon Moi.
“Today we have met from different political affiliations and parts of Kenya and we should maintain that unity for the sake of our country,” Ruto said.
The DP’s political journey is traced to the infamous YK 92 where a group of young Turks from rich families came together to strategize and campaign for the re-election of Moi in the 1992 general election.
Ruto has in the past said that he worked as a ‘Mtu wa Mkono’ for businessman Cyrus Jirongo.
