Activist Okiya Omtatah’s case challenging the issuance of the new Sh1000 notes has been forwarded to Chief Justice David Maraga.
The High Court, through Justice Weldon Korir on Tuesday, asked CJ David Maraga to handle this case.
Justice Korir requested CJ Maraga to form a three-judge bench that will listen to this case.
Omtatah moved to the High Court on Monday stating that the new notes launched by the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) are against the constitution thus, they should be rejected.
Filing a second petition after East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) MP Simon Mbugua filed a first petition challenging the same notes, Omtatah objected the new currency launched by President Uhuru Kenyatta on 1st Saturday, 2019 during the Madaraka Day celebrations in Narok.
“It is a lie that the currency was issued vide the Gazette Notice of 31st May 2019 as no such gazette notice exists at the Government Printer. A copy of the Kenya Gazette published on May 31, 2019, does not contain a notice issuing the currency,” argued Omtatah.
Omtatah had also stated that stating that the new currency includes images of Kenya's founding father Mzee Jomo Kenyatta.
The launching of the new currency has so far been received differently by a section of Kenyans and leaders.
Some have argued that it will help deal with corruption cases in the country.
