The fight against cancer may not be won if drug cartels are not removed from the healthcare system, Laikipia Woman Representative Catherine Waruguru has said.

Waruguru said the cartels were milking billions from families seeking medication for patients suffering from various types of cancer.

"Another problem that's is affecting the fight against cancer is the drug cartels. There are people out there milking money from desperate patients and family members. So inhumane to seek riches from the sick," she tweeted on Monday.

The legislator was reacting to a documentary 'Cancer Country' which aired on Citizen TV on Monday night that highlighted the desperation of cancer patients and put the government on the spot for failing to put up necessary structures and facilities to deal with the cancer menace.

Waruguru has been piling pressure on President Uhuru Kenyatta to declare cancer a national disaster and establish a fund to fight the disease which continues to claim the lives of many Kenyans.

She has already presented the Cancer Bill 2019 to the National Assembly which currently awaits scrutiny by the Health Committee chaired by Murang'a Woman Representative Sabina Chege.

If Waruguru's Bill sails through, all cancer patients in Kenya will receive free treatment.

"I believe by January we shall be debating the cancer bill and am sure I will get the full support by the members of parliament as well as Kenyans. So sad to watch this," she said.
