Safaricom Company Limited has initiated its investigations into what is believed to be conning attempts through its official customer care number. Many complaints arose with subscribers claiming that they had received calls from 0722 000 000 which is the line made for customer care calls.
As per the calls, the subscribers were being asked to give crucial information regarding their accounts. Subscribers flocked social media with complaints on how the callers posing as customer care even had their crucial information like that of M-Pesa transaction history.
"I was called through 0722 000 000 and whereby the caller asked me for information to do with my M-Pesa, M-shwari and even KCB M-Pesa. Could it have been Safaricom calling because the caller number was that of customer care?," tweeted Steve Muiruri on the Company's twitter handle.
Another subscriber lamented how the caller even had her information about the date of birth, area of residence, M-Pesa transactions, her PIN and even PUK and even her mother's.
The number in question being an official customer care line has raised eyebrows about the fraud with the company reporting that investigations are being initiated into such.
"We are working on the matter. Let it be everybody's duty to guard their private data, and just in case you feel doubtful, we are always here for you. Thank you for informing us, as it helps secure all transactions in our platforms," read a tweet reply from Safaricom.
Recently, Safaricom was sued together with Central Bank of Kenya and Communications Authority over issues relating to M-Pesa servers failures. The complainant Mr. Martin Muiruri, claimed how Safaricom had failed in full-time M-Pesa services provision, and yet there lacked a convincing explanation as to why.
Some months ago also, the giant company found itself on the receiving end after another lawsuit by yet another subscriber who argued that his personal details and that of many others had been exposed in a wrongful manner to people not supposed to have them.
