NARC-Kenya party leader Martha Karua has complimented Kwale Woman Representative Zuleikha Hassan for walking in the National Assembly with her five-month-old baby.
The Wednesday morning incident caused drama in Parliament after Luanda MP Chris Omulele, who was the presiding Speaker, ejected the legislator, causing an uproar from female MPs.
Karua termed Hassan's act as bold and noted it will go a long way in ensuring the enabling environment is created in workplaces for women with babies.
"Well done Zuleikha Hassan for your bold move today which has drawn national attention to the critical issue of creating an enabling environment for lactating mothers in the workplace," the former presidential candidate tweeted.
Expressing similar sentiments, former Nominated MP Sonia Birdi lauded Hassan, saying her move will make parliamentarians to consider legislating for a law to make it compulsory for crèches to be established in workplaces.
"Hon. Zulekha has brought up the issue at the perfect time. I just hope her actions and the voices of the people gives reason enough to legislators to make it mandatory for organisations to have rooms for mothers," Birdi posted on Wednesday.
Speaking to the press after she was kicked out of the chambers, the Kwale Woman Rep defended her action saying she carried her baby since she did not want to miss the morning session.
“I had an emergency and decided not to miss work but come with the baby. She is not an atomic bomb and can’t explode,” Hassan said.
