Cherangany Member of Parliament Joshua Kutuny has warned the Treasury and the Ministry of Agriculture against sanctioning any importation of maize.
Through his official Facebook page, Kutuny said they should first mop up what is available locally and that farmer's and millers are holding huge stocks of maize that is available in the country.
"I challenge the government to undertake a stock taking exercise to ascertain the amount of maize it is holding at the SFR, the amount bought by millers and the stock held by farmer's before entertaining any idea to import maize," said the Cherangany member of parliament.
"The government should take note that as leaders representing farmer's, we will not allow any importation of maize as was the case last year," Kutuny added.
Kutuny, however, said that he is aware that the Treasury has set aside Sh 2.8 billion for purchase of fertiliser in the 2019/2020 Budget that was delivered by Mr Rotich in Parliament yesterday.
"I challenge the government to move with speed and purchase subsidised top dressing fertiliser and make it available to the farmer's in the North Rift and other maize growing areas," said the jubilee party rebel member of parliament.
He noted that this will help farmer's increase crop yields considering that most farmers were unable to plant with the requisite amounts of fertiliser due to the high costs of fertiliser.
He revealed that in the coming week, leaders from the maize growing areas will be issuing a statement on the planned importation of maize.
