Onion is an underground bulb plant that contains numerous nutrients. These include vitamin C, sulfuric compounds, flavonoids and phytochemicals among others which are not only responsible for a healthy body but also for beautiful skin.
It however leads to several side effects when consumed in large quantities.
These include;
1. Causes abdominal bloating
Eating too many onions results to a bloated abdomen due to the high level of fructose they contain. The stomach is unable to completely ingest the fructose and hence it is pushed to the intestines and being acted on by the bacteria, the gas is formed that cause bloating and also discomfort.
2. Can lower blood sugar levels to quite low levels
Onions are rich in a compound called chromium which slows down the absorption of sugar into the bloodstream and hence increased onion intake leads to increased insulin production which in turn result to reduced blood sugar. This can hence lower the blood sugar to lower levels.
3. Causes heartburn
Even though eating an onion daily is good for your health, intake of large quantities of raw onions can alter your digestion resulting to heartburn. This increases due to the acidic components found in the onion on coming into contact with the stomach acids and causing acid refluxes.
