City lawyer Wahome Thuku has pledged to offer free legal services to journalists who were reportedly sacked by Mediamax Network Limited (MNL) on Wednesday.
MNL, which owns K24 TV, People Daily newspaper among other entities, on Wednesday offloaded about 160 employees after announcing one-month notice of mass firing.
According to reports, the major casualties were senior editors at K24 and Kameme TV stations, in a move said is a strategy by the media house to cut costs and streamline operations.
Thuku, who was a journalist before he ventured into legal practice, recalled how he was fired in a 'humiliating manner' by a certain local media firm, and vowed he will not let the same happen to the MNL employees.
"I don't want Mediamax employees to go through that. So I will support you free of charge. As soon as you get those dismissal letters, bring them to me," he said in a Facebook post.
Thuku said he will contact his colleagues in the legal practice, and look into the employees' grievances and sue the company if they find it necessary.
"I will get several other lawyers and we go through them to details. And if necessary we will institute the legal proceedings against the company at zero charges. That is the only way to support a brother/sister," the lawyer added.
"That aside, don't go into depression for losing a job. Noooo you are too wise for that. Hit the ground and do anything else available," he opined.
