Estranged Samburu Governor Moses Kasaine spent the better part of Sunday with Deputy President William Ruto at Kiambu County, attending a series of functions in company of Governor Ferdinand Waititu.
Also present at the event was Kajiado Governor Joseph Lenku. At Kiambaa, Kasaine castigated opposition team for their 'plot' against DP Ruto and accused investigations agencies of bias, a view held by DP Ruto as well in the fight against corruption.
On Tuesday, detectives from Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission arrested the governor in Nairobi over Sh85 million petrol scandal. He was detained at the agencies headquarters at Integrity Center.
According to EACC, Kasaine along with other 13 top county officials fraudulently defrauded the county government Sh85 million with an additional of 2 billion still under investigation.
DPP Noordin Haji on Monday issued a go ahead to have the governor and his officials prosecuted over conspiracy to commit economic crimes among others.
"The investigations established that the Governor Moses Kasaine Lenolkulal was trading with the County Government through Oryx Service Station for the supply of fuel since the 27th March 2013 to date," Mr Haji said in a statement.
"The governor failed and or neglected to disclose his interest in the said Service Station. It is clear that the governor engaged in conduct that is expressly prohibited in law and in clear violation of the constitutional principles governing the conduct of public and state officers."
Mr Kasaine is a key ally of Deputy President William Ruto in the Northern Kenya counties and among the pastralist communities. His arrest could yet again spark heated political exchanges across the country.
Busia Governor Sospeter Ojaamong, Okoth Obado of Migori and former Nairobi County boss Evans Kidero have all faced the wrath of EACC and both have active cases in court.
