On Friday night, three Al-Shabaab militants were killed by special forces and the police when they attacked Yuumbis village in North Eastern.

Incidentally, the militants had managed to kill over seven Kenyan police officers through a landmine explosion in Wajir County, a move that has led to intensified patrols both in Kenya and Somalia.

"Our officers effectively engaged [the suspected Al-Shabaab militants] and with quick reinforcement from Special Forces, [they] were repulsed," said NPS communications director Charles Wahong'o.

Mr Wahong'o said all police officers were safe and that a multi-agency team was pursuing the attackers.

"Security agencies remain on high alert to suppress and counter Al-Shabaab's heightened activity along the border with Somalia," he said.

But on Monday, KDF troops with a backup from Somali National Army managed to liberate two towns in the South of Mogadishu as the war against the militants intensified.

Both Koban and Al-Salin in Lower Shebelle were liberated after heavy gunfire exchanges. One Al-Shabaab militant was killed and several rounds of ammunition recovered.

"Somali soldiers backed by partner forces cleared Al-Shabaab militants from Koban village just north of Sanguni on Monday. One Al-Shabaab militant was killed, per source. An injured 12-year old boy has been brought to Kismayo for treatment; security source says boy was shot by AS," Voice of America journalist Harun Maruf tweeted.

"Somali special forces, Danab, have taken El-Salin village between K-50 and K-60 in Lower Dhabelle region on Saturday. Meanwhile, regular Govt forces moving towards capturing Dhanane and other coastal villages between Mogadishu and Marka," he added.
