Even as he awaits the outcome of the autopsy on his son Joseph, lawyer Assa Nyakundi could be a man in pain given that his father Michael Nyakundi, was also killed by armed gang a decade ago in Gusii.
Last Sunday, in what he insists was an accident, Nyakundi shot dead his son at Runda and is currently held at Nairobi Hospital by the police, recuperating from a shock.
His brother, Eliud Nyakundi, says the family was yet to recover from the father's death and that his brother, Assa, could have not killed his son knowingly.
“The Sunday incident has left us in shock. It is double tragedy with one of our own dead and another in hospital,” Assa’s younger brother, Bishop Eliud Nyakundi, who is a lecturer at Kisii University, told Nation.
The elder Nyakundi, then 85 in 2010, was attacked by unknown assailants at Ikuruma village in 2010, killing him instantly. He had reportedly pleaded to give them money before shooting him.
“Memories of our late father are still fresh in our minds and the latest incident only adds salt to injury,” he said.
"We are yet to come to terms with our father’s murder. He had just returned from the US after undergoing an expensive spinal surgery that cost the family Sh5 million. Why would anyone want to kill an 85-year-old man?" Assa had said about his father’s brutal murder then.
And now, the fate of the 60-year-old lawyer lies in the hands of the police, who are investigating the bizarre incident. According to him, he accidentally shot Joseph when he was adjusting his gun.
Government pathologist Johansen Oduor was set to carry out an autopsy on Joseph on Thursday to ascertain whether the father had any bad intentions against his son before shooting him dead.
