The suspects are said to have robbed the claimant and robbed him of $150,000, while on his way to take it to a politician who wanted his old notes changed to dollars.

The dealer says that he was on September 21 approached to help the politician, a deal he accepted, and packed the money in readiness to meet the politician.

He said that he left his premises in Eastleigh and headed for Uppehill, where he was to meet the politician in a hotel, only for the suspects to emerge and rob him of the money.

The politician reportedly wanted to dispose off his old Sh1000 notes which amounted to Sh15 million ahead of the deadline which was yesterday, hence the inclusion of the dealer.

The dealer reported the robbery at the Capitol Hill police station, resulting in a search which saw one of the suspects nabbed in Nairobi and the other three in Mombasa.

The group was arraigned in court on Monday, where the court allowed the police to hold them for 8 days pending conclusion of investigations.

The Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) has linked the withdrawal of the Sh1000 notes on illicit and corrption-related dealings, and has since introduced new notes to take over.

However, the directive will not affect corculation of notes of the remaining denominations, though new generation notes have been introduced for the lower denominations as well.
