A senior cop was this morning shot dead after a fierce exchange of fire with colleagues in Nairobi’s Kawangware estate.
Benson Indeje, who was an inspector attached to the Riruta Police Station died after he was shot five times. Attempts to save his life proved futile after he was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Nairobi Women's Hospital.
Preliminary reports indicate that the senior police officer was involved in an exchange of fire with his colleagues at Coast Area.
Police sources indicate that the deceased may have been intoxicated during the shooting. It all started when a group of bodaboda operators reported the cop to his colleagues that he was subjecting them to unnecessary harassment while appearing drunk.
The riders reported that he had drawn out his pistol during the process. His colleagues who were on patrol drove to the scene of the incident and accosted him.
The officers demanded to know his identity before the confrontation broke out. The police reported that the slain officer had shot at them prompting them to respond before shooting him dead.
Another police officer was reportedly injured during the incident after he was shot in the left wrist. His colleagues took him to hospital where he is undergoing treatment.
The police later confirmed that the slain officer had a certificate of appointment as well as a Ceska pistol which he was given to use on official duties.
The officer had allegedly used seven bullets from the firearm before he was gunned down.
Detectives have launched a probe into the matter. The deceased’s body was moved to the morgue pending burial plans.
