Police have recovered some bags of the sugar suspected to contain mercury that went missing from the Bollore godown in Changamwe last week
5,000 bags of Mercury-laced sugar was stolen from the godown under unclear circumstances.
A senior detective who sought anonymity told Daily Nation on Saturday that officers in Jomvu confiscated the sugar from a house in Bangladesh slum, which is also within Changamwe.
The officers started an operation on Saturday that ended at the suspected house.
They surrounded the house and eventually managed to arrest one woman, the owner of the house.
Police suspected the woman was among those who broke into the godown in last week.
"The Bangladesh community helped us recover the goods," the source was quoted by Daily Nation.
Detectives have asked for patience as they keep on unravelling the whole sugar riddle.
Mombasa Urban DCIO Anthony Muriithi did not give details of the operation. He said that more than 15 police officers were sent to the house and that police would later brief the media on the matter.
Changamwe Sub-county Police commander Daudi Loronyokwe also noted 300 bags of 'good' sugar went missing from the same godown.
Seven people were later arrested.
"The watchman who had been guarding the mercury sugar escaped but we are looking for him," Loronyokwe said
