A group of recovering alcoholics in Thika on Wednesday celebrated successfully completing their rehabilitation course.
The course which ran for three months admitted alcoholics between the ages of 22 and 60 years.
The graduation ceremony was led by Kiambu Women Representative Gathoni Wa Muchomba, who is the patron of the programme.
The Kiambu MP revealed that she began the programme after realising a section of youth in the area had fallen victim to alcohol abuse and were spending their nights in clubs or ditches in the streets.
The programme started by admitting 77 alcoholics, 65 of whom were successfully rehabilitated. However, due to limited facilities, only 200 alcoholics are admitted into the programme every three months.
"We began with 77 patients and out of them, 65 became sober. This is a successful programme. I now have 2600 registered victims,” said Wa Muchomba.
The outspoken MP further asked for financial assistance to operate the programme, in a bid to ensure more residents benefit from it.
President Uhuru Kenyatta who also attended the ceremony issued certificates to the graduates and working equipment to those who acquired different skills during their rehabilitation period.
