A school in Nyanza cheated in seven exams in the 2018 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE).
Education CS Amina Mohammed and Kenya National Examinations Council board chairperson George Magoha insisted that the exam had not leaked, it emerged that candidates in the school wrote similar answers in seven papers.
Knec confirmed the incident and said results for the school, which cannot be named at the moment as investigations are ongoing, were withheld as investigations are conducted.
“Had examiners not noted the unusual trend, the school would be among the top 10 schools nationally,” a source at Knec said.
According to the Standard, the school would be position six nationally.
Examiners suspected there was collusion among the candidates or with other parties who discussed the questions and answers relayed to the students.
The school will now wait up to January 31 to know the fate of the case.
Since the development, a dark crowd engulfed the school as parents and students wait for the KNEC’s decision with crossed fingers.
While releasing the 2018 KCSE, CS Amina said there will be fairness in all case flagged to ensure that innocent candidates are not punished unfairly.
“I wish to assure the nation, affected candidates and parents that due diligence will be undertaken to ensure that no candidate is unfairly penalised,” she said.
Professor George Magoha asked parents to stop putting pressure on their children to perform better as that is pushing candidates to devise odd ways of getting grades.
