According to eyewitnesses, the fire is believed to have been caused by electric power fault when crows patched on electric cables.

Michika Ndurya, an eyewitness, told the press that the fire started on one of the thatched (makuti) houses, moments after the birds took off from the cables that were very close to each other before spreading.

Speaking at the scene, Ndurya revealed that one of the villa houses, that belong to Nakupenda villas, had no occupants and that the owner had left for abroad.

He said, “the electric wires here are very close to each other. We believe that disturbance of the wires, which are also close to the houses, by the crows brought up all these menaces. We had to contact the firefighters because the fire was very huge.”

Karisa Mure, a caretaker at the neighbouring villa said that quick response by firefighters and neighbours managed to control the fire from spreading to more houses.

"We teamed up immediately we saw a huge black cloud of smoke coming from the villa. Later we were joined by the fire brigade and managed to control it,” Mure said on Wednesday.

Police in Malindi have launched an investigation over the incident to establish the root cause of the tragedy.
