The woman is said to have gone missing from her home on Saturday, only to be found dead.

The incident was confirmed by Yatta sub-county police commander Joseph Karanja who said the body was discovered by members of the public, who later reported the incident.

"We received a report on Monday evening that a lifeless body of a 70-year-old woman was seen floating in Muti river. The lady had been reported by the family to have gone missing a few days ago," said Karanja on phone.

Karanja said it is not clear whether the incident was an accident, or a suicide, adding that the woman was unstable mentally.

He said the police retrieved the body and took it to Yatta funeral home for preservation.

Police have began investigations into the incident, with Karanja warning residents against crossing swollen rivers to avoid drowning.

"Rivers in Machakos are now full of water and we have had cases of drowning being reported. Let's all avoid crossing these rivers and especially at night," he said.
