Speaking to the media on Tuesday, the Secretary-General Josphat Murangiri said that the council wants the changes included in the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI).

The elders want rather than salaries, the leaders get allowances instead.

Murangiri argued that the move will make it easy for the government to fight graft. He argued that the commercialization of leadership is among the reasons why corruption has been rampant in different dockets.

Murangiri faulted leaders rooting for the creation of different positions in government including Prime Minister. He noted that every tribe in this nation deserves to be part of leadership and not just a few of them.

“What we need in this country is servant leadership, not a situation where people seek elective positions to access easy money. If the elected leaders are paid an allowance, it is easier to attract servant leaders and we can easily do a lifestyle audit on them. Once they finish their term, they can be paid a handshake package,” Mr Murangiri said.

He further said that leaders have taken advantage of their positions to amass wealth at the expense of the taxpayers, adding that time has come for the same to end.
