The same cannot be said of Abdul Haji who swiftly responded to the Westgate Mall attack orchestrated by Al-Shabaab militants.

When he got a message from his brother Noordin Haji, now the Director of Public Prosecutions, he did not think twice.

Together with his friend, they sped towards the mall that was under attack.

There was confusion everywhere when they arrived at the mall.

They scurried toward the upper parking mall where they were met by a ghastly sight; bloodied dead bodies were everywhere.

Bodies of children, women and the elderly were on the floor.

Haji says he had to summon the courage through the turmoil and try to save some lives.

"There was nothing to do for the dead," he told an international broadcaster.

As they moved to the upper floors, they met people struck with terror hiding in shops and assured them that they were the good guys who were here to save them.

Some people played dead and would not respond to calls to open doors.

As they moved to upper floors, they encountered fire from the terrorists and one of his colleagues was struck in the stomach.

He was quickly taken out to receive medical attention.

Thanks to the pressure that they brought to bear on the terrorists, many lives were saved.

Photos of Abdul Haji's rare act of courage were carried by international broadcasters.
