Machakos Governor Dr Alfred Mutua has said that public hospitals in Machakos County are offering better services than private hospitals.
Speaking after visiting Shalom Hospital in Machakos on Monday, Mutua urged residents to give priority to public hospitals first before seeking medication at privately-owned facilities.
Mutua urged the private sector in the health industry to keep up with the public sector in terms of service delivery.
"This hospital has a smell. My level five, four and three hospitals can't be compared to this at all; they are far much better. I wonder why people go to private hospitals when there are public hospitals. First, go to public and if you're dissatisfied go to private, "said Mutua.
Mutua had arrived at the hospital where he called for its closure and revocation of its license after a seven-month-old baby died after an overdose of morphine was injected into his system.
Baby Ethan was given a morphine injection that sent him to his early grave.
Mutua said that morphine should have been the last resort by the health officer putting in mind this was a kid.
According to Prof Fredrick Were, a paediatrician and a member of the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentist Board (KMPDU), the baby died after an overdose of morphine.
He said the baby got 20ml of morphine instead of 1ml as required reason as to why he developed difficulty in breathing and died.
