Deputy President William Ruto has fired a directive to all public service vehicle companies after 50 people perished in a grisly road accident Wednesday morning.
The accident occurred at Fort Tenan in Kericho County. The ill-fated bus was headed for Kisumu when the accident happened.
The 52-seater bus veered off the road before rolling several times. The terrain of the area is dotted by long, winding steep slopes.
Ruto in his directive asked all PSV companies to adhere to road safety rules which require all drivers to be void of fatigue.
The DP also said that refresher courses should be instituted for all drivers.“PSV companies must adhere to road safety rules; ensure their drivers are not fatigued and administer refresher driving courses to staff,” tweeted the DP.
County Police Commander James Mugera said that the accident which left the roof of the bus blown off happened at about 5 am.
Casualties were rushed to Muhoroni sub-county hospital and Kericho hospital.
Opposition leader Raila Odinga sent a message of condolence to the bereaved families. He appealed for road sanity.
"I send my deepest condolences to the friends and families who have lost their loved ones in the horrific accident that occurred at Fort Tenan. May the souls of all the departed rest in eternal peace. I appeal to police officers to arrest the return of madness on our roads."
