The Ugenya parliamentary race is an interesting one, the contest having slimmed down to a two-horse encounter between Chris Karan and former MP David Ochieng'.

Karan, the current lawmaker, is seeking to retain the seat on an Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) ticket and Ochieng' will vie on a Movement for Democracy and Growth (MDG) party ticket.

However, Ochieng' appears to be the man to watch in the by-election set for April 5 as he could set a record in the region in the event that he survives the ODM wave.

Considering that the constituency falls under Siaya county, the homeland of opposition boss and ODM leader Raila Odinga, a win for a rival candidate would be historical.

Also, all the other MPs from the entire county are in office on an ODM ticket, and a win for Ochieng' would spoil the structure, making Ochieng' a record holder.

Actually, he will be the first person to hold a parliamentary seat in the county on a different party other than ODM since the introduction of counties.

He will be the first politician who has been branded a Jubilee 'mole' to survive the heavy campaign mounted against him.

Raila has since dispatched a strong team of area leaders led by Siaya Senator James Orengo, Governor Cornell Rasanga and Gem MP Elisha Odhiambo to ensure the party retains the seat.

The seat fell vacant after the Supreme Court nullified Karan's 2017 election following a successful petition by Ochieng'.

Will Ochieng' clinch the seat and make history? Only time will tell.
