The earth engulfed the moon in its shadow and created the longest total lunar eclipse in this century, a full 103 minutes on Friday night.

Residents in Taita Taveta, including Deputy Governor Majala Mlagui witnessed the lunar eclipse which is famously known as the blood moon at around 10:45 pm.

The eclipse was visible from every continent on earth except North America. 

"My red planet and blood moon experience in Mwatate... Beautiful transition from the eclipse to a yellow orange moon and finally blood moon," said Mlagui after witnessing the spectacular eclipse.2018 features two lunar eclipses. 

On January 31, there was a spectacular blue blood moon eclipse. Friday's July 27, blood moon was the longest total lunar eclipse of the 21st century. 

Both are be total lunar eclipses, when the full moon passes through earth's shadow.

Lunar eclipses are visible from anywhere on Earth where it is night time. During total lunar eclipses, the moon turns a deep red color when it enters the depths of earth's shadow. 

The next one will happen in 2029.
