Former Subukia MP Koigi wa Wamwere has hit out at Kenyans for failing to hold their elected leaders to account over development issues.
In a Facebook post on Tuesday evening, Koigi wondered whether there would be a time when Kenyans would make decisions on how to elect better leaders who could provide amicable solutions to their problems through constitutional changes or otherwise rather than electing those who care about their own welfare.
Further, the former cabinet minister took issue with the political and economic system in Kenya which involved the private-sector controlling trade and industry which had impoverished citizens and questioned whether Kenyans could ever elect able leaders who could address such.
"How best can we have leaders who are better than the ones we currently have who can change law and constitution to solve my problems and yours? How can we have social democracy, a better system than capitalism that is currently killing us with poverty, loans, corruption and unemployment? Why are most of us not challenging the rotten system we inherited from British colonialism?," Koigi noted in part of his post.
He further expressed reservations on whether the BBI report would be changed to accommodate the changes he advocated for rather than being left to be hijacked by selfish politicians who would seek to fulfil their own ambitions.
Koigi also claimed that Kenyans lacked the boldness to approach their leadership and engage them in a serious and candid discussion on how various problems could be solved.
"They lack courage to demand changes from their leaders," he noted.
