The controversial Gender Bill on Wednesday failed to pass in the National Assembly with the Majority Leader Hon. Aden Duale forced to shelve the bill until 2019 since some MPs failed to show up in the house.
The bill required at least 233 Members of Parliament to be present for voting to be done but only 212 MPs showed up.
Some women leaders have been pushing their male counterparts to pass the bill with Suba North Member of Parliament being on the forefront arguing that nominating women gives them a platform to show their potential thereafter being elected by the people.
Passing this bill will overburden the already overtaxed Kenyans to dig deeper in their pockets to cater for the wages of another bunch of nominated MPs. Moreover, we have a good number of elected lawmakers today who competed with male contestants and defeated them. Dr Eve Obara, Hon. Millie Odhiambo, Hon. Eve Obara and Aisha Jumwa are few examples of elected MPs in the National Assembly among others.
We also have three elected women governors; Charity Ngilu, Anne Waiguru and Joyce Laboso are currently serving their first terms in the office as elected governors having successfully vied against popular male politicians.
With the above examples, women should stand up and battle it out with men rather than sit back and wait for free nominations which will overburden Kenyans with taxes.
