In a country like Kenya where few female politicians have taken the President head-on on various matters, Kandara MP Alice Wahome recently joined the small club of such politicians.
Twice in a span of less than a week, Wahome had the courage to do what others have failed to do; fearlessly attacking the country's top political voices; President Uhuru Kenyatta and ODM leader Raila Odinga.
In a fiery press conference in Malindi, the vocal MP claimed that the President was a threat to the country's democracy and freedom of speech. Former Prime Minister was not spared either as he was accused of being Uhuru's political mercenary for hire.
During the funeral of former Nairobi Mayor Charles Rubia in Murang'a on Monday, Wahome set in motion his attacks on the President when he accused him of allegedly "returning the country to old days" of freedom of speech suppression. But when he took to the podium, Uhuru denied such claims.
In a space of three days, one woman has become the thorn on Uhuru's fresh. The lady is Alice Wahome.
Just only very few women politicians in Kenya have dared to take the country's political big boys head-on.
During her heydays, former MP Chelegat Mutai took President Daniel Arap Moi head-on. Then came Martha Karua, who redefined the role of a female MP in Kenya. For years, she has faced off with the rainmakers of Kenyan politics.
Now probably with her best days behind her, Wahome seems to be taking the baton from Karua.
She may not be sharing Karua's political philosophy, but the Kandara MP's most recent political activities suggest that she could be charting her own new style of politics that will surely make her today's "Iron Lady" of Kenyan politics. As to whether she will reach the standards set by her predecessors remains to be seen.
