In a past interview with KBC, Sifuna vowed to resign should Ekuru Aukot's led Punguza Mzigo initiative garner the required 1 million signatures for referendum push.

“I know what it takes to raise 1 million signatures. Third way Alliance in this country is a nuisance, they are here for nuisance value. I can guarantee you and I can bet here in front of this country that if Thirdway Alliance is able to get a million signatures, I will resign as Secretary-General of ODM. I know for a fact they cannot do it,” he said.

Mr Aukot's team was cleared on Thursday when Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission announced that the initiative had gathered required signatures to push for a referendum.

But in a tweet, Sifuna appeared to dismiss his resignation calls, even as online users piled pressure on him to call it a day from Orange House in honour of his promise.

And Sifuna also claimed that Aukot's team might have been assisted by some forces to gather the required signatures for the referendum. He however wished them well.

"It wasn't me.I was misquoted.I don't recall. I said re-sign not resign. I would rather die. I've never been on KBC. I don't know who Third Way are. Take your pick! This is a WIND ASSISTED and pyrhic "victory" but all the best to @EAukot @fokango and their #PunguzaMizigoBill2019," he wrote.

In 2016, ODM party failed to collect 1 million signatures in a bid to push for constitutional changes. According to IEBC records, they only managed to get 850,000.

But despite Aukot's latest victory, he must however convince over 24 County Assemblies before the changes are proposed to the people through voting.
