The process will now cost Sh400 million. The amount is twice the cost of the previous budget which was capped at Sh200 million.

The city manager said the initial budget of Sh200 million was too little to make an impact, leading to the cost adjustment.

"We did a decommissioning study that found that we need to treat the waste with chemicals to avoid bad smell, and be able to use it to make compost manure among other things," she said as quoted by Standard.

"Hauling the waste out of the dumpsite using lorries to a quarry in Kajulu is quite a process. We did a research and found that 67 per cent of the garbage is organic and biodegradable. Only 37 is highly toxic. So it's not that hazardous," she added.

Sh97 million was reportedly used in the first phase of the relocation which started last year.

The City manager said that they have acquired land in Chiga at a cost of Sh50 million, where the waste will be dumped.

While campaigning to become the second Kisumu Governor last year, Anyang Nyong’o promised to relocate the waste within 100 days if elected.
