Moiben Member of Parliament Silas Tiren has threatened to mobilize farmers across agricultural counties in the North Rift region to hold a major demonstration in Eldoret.
This is if the government fails to pay farmers for the produce supplied to the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB).
On Saturday, Treasury Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich said the government had released Sh1.4 billion to the Ministry of Devolution which has been mandated to pay farmers for maize supplied to NCPB.
"We want to tell CS Wamalwa to stand by his words and make sure that come Monday farmers are paid their dues if not we will hold demonstrations that have never been seen,” said the rebel Jubilee MP.
Tiren said farmers have suffered a lot and its time the government fulfils its promises failure to which they will face the consequences.
“If the money will not be paid by Monday they will face the wrath of farmers,” added the second term legislator.
Farmers have been demanding their pay for maize delivered to NCPB between last October and March 2018.
Tiren who has been on the forefront in championing for farmers issues further asked the Ministry of Agriculture to put in place sufficient measures including funds that will ensure farmers deliver their maize to NCPB and are paid promptly.
Maize farmers are currently preparing for a harvesting season.
“Farmers will only accept to sell their produce to NCPB at Sh3,200 per bag and nothing else,” said Tiren.
